Description

Lighting Setups in Motion: 16 Turntables

See how the classic lighting setups behave from every angle. A neutral, matte, plaster-style head-and-shoulders bust turns a full 360° in 8 seconds under 16 different lighting setups. The lights stay fixed while the subject turns, so each clip shows how the setup reads from the front, at three-quarter, in profile and from behind.

Every clip comes labelled and clean. The labelled version shows the setup name, a short explanation, the light list (type and size, angle, elevation, distance, approximate EV relative to the key) and a live top-view diagram of the light positions and which way the head is facing.

The 16 setups

#SetupWhat it shows
01RembrandtKey high and to the side so the nose shadow meets the cheek shadow, leaving a lit triangle under the far eye.
02Butterfly (Paramount)Key directly in front and above the lens; a symmetrical butterfly-shaped shadow sits under the nose.
03LoopKey ~30–40° off-axis and slightly above eye level; the nose shadow forms a small loop that does not touch the cheek shadow.
04SplitKey at 90° to the face at eye level; exactly half the face is lit.
05BroadHead turned away from the key; the side of the face nearest the camera (the broad side) is lit. Widens the face.
06ShortHead turned toward the key; the side of the face turned away from camera (the short side) is lit. Slims the face.
07Rim / EdgeTwo strip lights behind and to each side outline the silhouette; a faint frontal fill keeps detail in the face.
08ClamshellSoft key above and soft fill below, both on the lens axis, like an open shell. Flat, beauty-style light.
09High-keyLarge frontal key, two fills and a brightly lit white background: low contrast and almost shadowless.
10Low-keyOne small, hard-edged key and no fill against a dark background; deep shadows dominate the frame.
11Classic Three-pointKey at 45°, fill on the opposite side at about one third of the key, and a rim light behind to separate the subject.
12Under-lightingKey below the face pointing up. Unnatural shadows climb the face; the classic horror or campfire look.
13Top LightKey almost straight overhead. The eye sockets fall into shadow; reads as overhead office or noon sun.
14Silhouette / BacklitOnly the background is lit. The subject reads as a dark shape; best with a strong profile.
15Cross LightingTwo hard lights from opposite sides, slightly behind the subject. Strong texture and highlights on both cheeks, shadowed centre.
16Window LightOne large, cool, soft source to the side, like a north-facing window, with a little bounce from the room.
